Dental School Interview Prep and MMI Coaching

Dental schools interview applicants before making offers, using traditional, panel, group or multiple mini interview (MMI) formats, often on video. Below is a free guide to preparing, plus a checklist for the week before. If you want practice with feedback, our dental school interview prep package is $347.

How to prepare for a dental school interview

Good interviews come from preparation, not memorized scripts. These five steps work for every format.

  1. 1

    Know your format

Read the invite carefully: traditional one-on-one, panel, group, MMI stations or virtual. Each one rewards a different kind of practice.

  2. 2

Prepare five or six core stories

Why dentistry, why this school, a challenge you handled, a time you worked on a team, an ethical choice. Most questions can be answered with one of these stories.

  3. 3

Practice out loud, on a timer

Say your answers out loud and record yourself. MMI stations are short and timed, so practice getting to your point quickly.

  4. 4

    Know your own application

Interviewers often read your AADSAS application first. Be ready to talk about every experience, gap and grade you listed.

  5. 5

    Plan the day

Prepare two or three questions to ask the school. For virtual interviews, test your camera, light and connection the day before.

The week before your interview

  • You know the format and schedule of the day
  • You can explain why this school in specific terms
  • You have practiced your core stories out loud
  • You re-read your AADSAS application
  • You have questions ready to ask
  • Your outfit and (for virtual) setup are ready

The last hurdle to overcome prior to an acceptance is the dental school interview. The interview holds immense weight on determining your admissions outcome. Are you ready for the challenge?

The Interview Coaching Package is put together to remove any doubt at your interview. Your specialist will review interview protocols, provide you with a common question sheet and answer any questions you may have. From there, you have 2 hours of 1-on-1 interview time available to schedule. During your interview sessions, you can choose to tailor your interview sessions towards school-specific interview formats or practice all of them. How do dental school interviews work?

Dental schools use a few formats, and many applicants meet more than one in the same cycle. A traditional interview is a one-on-one or panel conversation about your application. The multiple mini interview (MMI) is a series of short timed stations, often with ethical scenarios. Some schools add group tasks, and many interviews are now held on video.

Each format rewards a different skill. MMI stations reward structured thinking under a timer; traditional interviews reward clear stories about your experiences. Our coaching starts by matching your practice to the formats your schools actually use.

What happens in a mock interview session?

Sessions run on video so we can see what an interviewer sees: pace, eye contact, filler words and how you handle a question you did not expect. After each answer we stop, explain what worked and what did not, and help you rebuild the answer. You can spend your two hours on one format or spread them across all of them.

  • "Why dentistry?" and other questions every school asks
  • Ethical scenarios and MMI-style stations under time
  • Questions about your own experiences and weak spots
  • School-specific practice for your top choices

When should I start interview prep?

Start when you submit your application, not when the invite arrives. Invites can come with only a week or two of notice, and the strongest answers come from practice spread over several sessions. If you already have an invite, book the free call and we will plan your hours around the date.

“The personal statement express was a lifesaver!!! I wasn't even going to apply this application cycle; however, with a last minute change of plans, I found myself scrambling to get everything finished. I had just written my personal statement, and was about to submit my application, and I was able to get feedback just a few hours after I sent it. The advice was very thorough and helpful! I actually talked with a dental school admissions committee on the phone to receive application feedback, and they said I had one of the best personal statements they had ever seen. Thank you Future Dental Prep!!!”

“I used the Personal Statement Express Overview that is offered by Future Dental Prep because I was finished with writing my personal statement, but I couldn't find the "perfect" final draft. I wanted an honest opinion from someone who didn't know me. Using this service was a wonderful experience! My assigned expert contacted me through email and thoroughly reviewed my personal statement within a day. The review included an overview of each paragraph with comments on the content, ways to improve the structure of the paper and grammatical corrections. In addition, my expert rated my paper out of 10 and wrote a summary of how the paper was put together and his thoughts on enhancement. The courteous feedback and timeliness of service was exactly what I needed to feel confident in my personal statement. It helped me to take what I wrote and make it into a strong, well-structured personal statement that I loved.”

“My experience with Future Dental Prep admissions was great. There was a great communication which allowed making the phone call appointment very easy. The phone call itself was very helpful for me. Before making the phone call, I was very unsure of where I stood regarding which schools I have a chance in being admitted, but my consultant made it very clear for me. He carefully answered all the questions I had and even allowed me to ask questions after the session. Now I feel confident regarding what school I will be applying to.”
