How to write a strong dental school personal statement

Admissions readers want to know three things: why dentistry, what you have actually done to test that choice, and what kind of dentist you will be. Follow these steps and you will cover all three.

  1. 1

    Start with your real reason

Pick one or two moments that moved you toward dentistry, such as a patient you met while shadowing or working with your hands. Your own moment is stronger than any general statement about helping people.

  2. 2

    Show, don't tell

Describe what you did and noticed, and let the reader conclude you are caring or hard-working. "I stayed after closing to explain the procedure to her daughter" says more than "I am compassionate".

  3. 3

    Connect experiences to dentistry

For each experience, say what it taught you that matters in a dental chair: communication, steady hands, patience, trust. This is what turns a list into a story.

  4. 4

    Use a simple structure

An opening moment, two or three paragraphs that each cover one experience and what you learned, and a closing that looks ahead to the dentist you want to become.

  5. 5

    Edit to 4,500 characters

The limit counts spaces. Cut repeated ideas and extra adjectives, read it out loud, and have someone else read it before you submit.

Check your draft

  • The first paragraph could only have been written by you
  • It says why dentistry, not just why healthcare
  • It tells one or two stories instead of listing activities
  • It avoids clichés like "ever since I was a child"
  • Someone else has read it
  • It is under 4,500 characters, spaces included

How it works with us

  1. 1

    Send your draft or ideas

Share a full draft, a rough outline, or just the experiences you want to write about.

  2. 2

    Line-by-line review

Your specialist reads every sentence, marks red flags and explains what to change and why.

  3. 3

    Revise together

You rewrite in your own voice. Gold includes two rounds; Platinum continues until it is ready.

  4. 4

    Final polish

A last pass for flow, sentence structure and the 4,500-character AADSAS limit.

The personal statement is a very crucial aspect of your application as it not only gives insight into the type of person you are, but the type of dental student you will be. The personal statement is usually one of the first pieces of information the dental school admissions committee reviews and therefore, it is extremely vital that you present yourself in the best light.

The personal statement service is a personalized, comprehensive package. This service includes unlimited* rounds of critique and editing. We review your personal statement one sentence at a time, top to bottom. We'll give you advice, suggest revisions of certain ideas or sentences, and point out any red flags. You will also have 1-on-1 access to our in-house expert via appointments should you need additional guidance. Whether you just need an expert's eyes to review your statement, or are just starting out with a rough draft, this service will ensure you will remain memorable in the eyes of the admissions committee.

Please note: We do not write your personal statement for you. We help you with idea generation, outline and/or revision of an already written personal statement.

What does a dental school personal statement editor do?

A good editor does not rewrite your statement into someone else's voice. They read it the way an admissions committee will: quickly, looking for why you chose dentistry, what you have actually done, and whether you sound like someone who will finish dental school.

We review your statement one sentence at a time, top to bottom. You get specific comments on what to cut, what to expand and what reads as a red flag, plus suggested revisions you can accept, change or ignore. Every word that ends up in the final statement is yours.

Which personal statement package should I choose?

Pick by how close you are to done. If your statement is finished and you want an expert opinion fast, Express gives you paragraph-by-paragraph feedback and a score out of 10 within 48 hours. If you have a draft that needs real work, Gold includes brainstorming, an outline and two full rounds of critique and editing. If you are starting from scratch or want help until submission day, Platinum includes an initial call, unlimited rounds of editing and a final polish.

  • Express ($167): one written review, 48-hour turnaround, rating out of 10
  • Gold ($474): outline help plus 2 rounds of critique and editing
  • Platinum ($797): brainstorming call, unlimited rounds, final polish

The mistakes we fix most often

Most statements we see are not badly written. They are generic. The most common problems are an opening that could belong to any applicant, a list of activities instead of one or two stories that show who you are, telling the reader you are compassionate instead of showing it, and a closing paragraph that repeats the first. We also check the practical parts: the 4,500-character AADSAS limit (spaces count), tone, and anything an admissions reader could misread.

When should I get my personal statement edited?

Start before the AADSAS application opens in May so you can submit early in the cycle. Many dental schools review applications on a rolling basis, so a polished statement ready in June is worth more than a perfect one in September. If you are already late, Express is built for a fast second opinion.

“The personal statement express was a lifesaver!!! I wasn't even going to apply this application cycle; however, with a last minute change of plans, I found myself scrambling to get everything finished. I had just written my personal statement, and was about to submit my application, and I was able to get feedback just a few hours after I sent it. The advice was very thorough and helpful! I actually talked with a dental school admissions committee on the phone to receive application feedback, and they said I had one of the best personal statements they had ever seen. Thank you Future Dental Prep!!!”

“I used the Personal Statement Express Overview that is offered by Future Dental Prep because I was finished with writing my personal statement, but I couldn't find the "perfect" final draft. I wanted an honest opinion from someone who didn't know me. Using this service was a wonderful experience! My assigned expert contacted me through email and thoroughly reviewed my personal statement within a day. The review included an overview of each paragraph with comments on the content, ways to improve the structure of the paper and grammatical corrections. In addition, my expert rated my paper out of 10 and wrote a summary of how the paper was put together and his thoughts on enhancement. The courteous feedback and timeliness of service was exactly what I needed to feel confident in my personal statement. It helped me to take what I wrote and make it into a strong, well-structured personal statement that I loved.”

“My experience with Future Dental Prep admissions was great. There was a great communication which allowed making the phone call appointment very easy. The phone call itself was very helpful for me. Before making the phone call, I was very unsure of where I stood regarding which schools I have a chance in being admitted, but my consultant made it very clear for me. He carefully answered all the questions I had and even allowed me to ask questions after the session. Now I feel confident regarding what school I will be applying to.”

Frequently asked questions

Will you write my personal statement for me?

No. We help with ideas, outlines and revisions of a statement you write. Admissions committees expect your own voice, and ghostwriting puts your application at risk.

How long is the AADSAS personal statement?

The AADSAS personal statement allows up to 4,500 characters, including spaces. Use our free character counter to check your draft before you send it.

How fast will I get feedback?

Express reviews are returned within 48 hours. Gold and Platinum rounds are scheduled with your specialist; tell us your deadline on the free call and we plan around it.

What if I only have ideas and no draft yet?

Gold and Platinum both include brainstorming and outlining, so you can start from a list of experiences. Platinum begins with a voice call to build the outline together.
